The Presidency has outlined several reasons why every Nigerian may need to obtain the soon-to-be-launched general multipurpose identity card from the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).
In a sensitization video shared on X by the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Media Centre on Wednesday, the Presidency highlighted that the card will grant access to government interventions, in line with efforts to increase transparency in the social contract between the government and citizens.
Additionally, it was mentioned that cardholders will have the opportunity to easily access loans from both government agencies and financial institutions, as their credit scores will be based on verifiable financial histories.

Notably, the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP) recently announced a collaboration with NIMC to accelerate the development of credit scores for all Nigerians who possess a National Identification Number (NIN).
While the multipurpose card is set to be available soon, the Presidency reiterated its commitment to promoting greater financial inclusion for Nigerians through this new initiative.
“The National ID Card aims to bring over 100 million Nigerians into the banking sector as it automatically bestows on them an inclusion that has evaded more than half of the country’s population for a very long time,” it said.
“Users also have the option of requesting either credit or debit cards,” it added.

Although the National Identification Number (NIN) is already required for obtaining an international passport and driver’s license, the Presidency has announced that it will now also be necessary for applying for both government and private sector jobs.
This move is aimed at enhancing employers’ confidence in the authenticity of job seekers’ profiles, ensuring they are verified citizens with no questionable records.
Dr. Peter Iwegbu, the Head of Card Management Services at the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), spoke about the distribution process during a media workshop in Lagos last week.
He emphasized that while the NIN is mandatory for all Nigerians, individuals who wish to obtain the card must submit a request for it.
Iwegbu also highlighted that the multipurpose identity cards will be launched in a few weeks, as the test sample cards have already been received.
He further explained that NIMC has decentralized the application and collection process to make it more accessible to Nigerians.
The NIMC is collaborating with banks nationwide, allowing people to request the card at any nearby bank.
Additionally, Iwegbu assured that the Commission would ensure the cards are issued at a consistent price across all banks.
