Fubara Reacts To Supreme Court Judgment Sacking Rivers LG Chairmen

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has assured the people of the state that his administration will implement the Supreme Court’s ruling after thoroughly reviewing its Certified True Copy (CTC).

This follows the apex court’s decision on Friday, which declared the local government election held in the state on October 5, 2023, as invalid.

In a state broadcast on Sunday, Fubara announced that he had met with his legal team, who expect to receive the CTC by Friday, March 7, 2025.

He reiterated his commitment to adhering to constitutional principles and acting in accordance with the law.

In response to the Supreme Court’s ruling, the governor directed the Heads of Local Government Administration (HLGAs) to immediately assume control of the 23 local government councils across the state.

This action comes after the court’s decision to annul the October 5, 2023, local government elections.

Fubara also stated that civil servants would temporarily manage the councils until new elections are held by the State Electoral Commission.

The governor instructed the outgoing chairmen to formally hand over responsibilities to the HLGAs by Monday. Amid the ongoing political uncertainty, Fubara called for calm and assured the public that his administration remains committed to governance and due process.

In another ruling on Friday, the Supreme Court barred the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Accountant General of the Federation, and other agencies from releasing funds to Rivers State until it complies with the court’s orders.

The judgment, delivered by Justice Emmanuel Akomaye, also saw the dismissal of an appeal filed by Fubara challenging the validity of the House of Assembly under Martin Amaewhule’s leadership.

The court ruled that Amaewhule should immediately resume his duties as Speaker alongside other elected members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
