Reps Make U-Turn On Bill To Remove Immunity Enjoyed By Vice President, Governors, Deputies

The House of Representatives has reversed its decision regarding the second reading of a bill that aimed to remove immunity from prosecution for the vice president, state governors, and their deputies.

The bill, intended to combat corruption and promote accountability, will now be subject to further debate.

The House also reversed its decision on a bill seeking to abolish the death penalty.

On Wednesday, 42 constitutional amendment bills, including the immunity removal bill, had passed their second reading.

However, on Thursday, a bill proposing the creation of a Prime Minister position as head of government, while retaining the President as head of state, passed its second reading. This was among 32 constitutional amendment bills that advanced.

Other bills that passed second reading on Thursday included:

  • A bill to allocate specific seats for women in the National Assembly and state houses of assembly.
  • A bill to expedite the resolution of pre-election petitions, establish pre-election tribunals, and regulate the suspension of National Assembly members.
