Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has officially left the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), pointing to “protracted internal crises” and the necessity to “protect the overall interest of the people of the State.”
The announcement was made on Friday through a statement from the Director of Media and Publicity, Government House, Kano, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
The Governor’s exit, effective “January 23, 2026,” was formalized in a letter to his ward chairman in Gwale local government.

While he expressed gratitude for the “platform and support extended to him since joining the NNPP in 2022,” he cited “persistent leadership disputes, internal disagreements and ongoing legal battles” as the primary reasons for his departure.
Governor Yusuf noted that these “unresolved crises” had fostered deep divisions and “created uncertainty among members,” reaching a point he described as “increasingly irreconcilable.”
He clarified that the move was the result of “careful reflection” and was “guided strictly by public interest considerations.”
In his letter, the Governor stated: “After careful reflection, and without prejudice to the party’s capacity to resolve its internal challenges, I have come to the conclusion that my resignation is in the best interest of the people of Kano State.”
He maintained that the choice was made “in good faith, without bitterness,” while reaffirming his dedication to the “continued progress of the state.”
In a major political shift, the Governor did not leave alone; he resigned alongside 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives and all the 44 local government chairmen across the state.
The NNPP Ward Secretary, Hon. Kabiru Zubairu, acknowledged the letter and praised Yusuf’s record in “infrastructure development, urban renewal, health, education and economic empowerment.”
Zubairu admitted to the party’s internal turmoil, stating that the NNPP had no choice but to accept the resignation of its “most performing governor.”
