In a significant political shift, Senator Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, a former federal lawmaker and daughter of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, has officially declared her membership in the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State.
She shared this news on Saturday during an interview with Nigerian football icon Segun Odegbami on 103.7FM Eagle7 Sports. Describing the APC as her “natural home,” the former senator explained that her re-entry into the political arena was fueled by consistent lobbying from her followers.
Regarding the push for her return, she stated, “As I told you, a group of people whom I did not bring together, I did not form them into a group, have been working, I think, for two years now. And then they started talking to me about a year ago, saying, ‘Look, we think you are the best candidate. We want you back.’”

While she previously ran under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), she dismissed a return to her former party due to its ongoing internal turmoil.
She also noted that while the African Democratic Congress (ADC) was a possibility, she had concerns regarding their level of readiness. Ultimately, the fact that her primary supporters were already within the APC made the “broom party” the logical choice.
She emphasized that her decision followed thorough consultations: “So, I think APC is my natural home. I don’t have any animosity towards any individual or any group within the APC. I feel comfortable with all the actors I know within the APC.”
She further elaborated on her preference, saying, “I feel more comfortable, actually, than with some of the actors I know in the PDP, and some of them are now in the ADC. So I think it’s my natural home. I feel quite confident and happy to have made that decision. I have an absolute 100 per cent feeling it’s my natural home.”
Though the APC has not yet released a formal statement, this move signals her return to the spotlight after a 15-year hiatus. Reports indicate she formalized her membership through the APC’s e-registration at Ibogun, Ward 11, in Ifo Local Government.
Her return has sparked rumors that she may be eyeing the governorship seat in the 2027 general elections.
Senator Obasanjo-Bello, who served as Ogun State Commissioner for Health and later represented Ogun Central in the Senate from 2007 to 2011, had relocated to the United States to pursue an academic career as a professor following her 2011 re-election loss.
