In what appears to be a massive boost for the emerging opposition coalition, former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has declared his willingness to serve as the running mate to Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential election.
Kwankwaso made this disclosure during an interview on ARISE News PrimeTime on Monday night.
He emphasized that Nigeria’s current priority must be competent leadership rather than the traditional debate over whether power should reside in the North or the South.

“What is key now is not presidency from the North or from the South. What is key is to have quality leadership—people who are determined and committed to give the country the leadership it deserves,” Kwankwaso stated.
The NNPP leader explained that coalition leaders have reached an understanding that Southern Nigeria should complete another term to stabilize the political climate. He noted that Peter Obi is emerging as the central figure of this alliance following the National Democratic Congress’s decision to zone its ticket to the South.
When asked specifically if he would serve as Obi’s deputy, Kwankwaso confirmed his commitment to the party’s decision.
“Yes, you can be sure. If the party decides that I should be the running mate of any candidate from the South, under the circumstances, I would be happy to work together with him,” he said.
Kwankwaso, who led the Kwankwasiyya movement during the 2023 cycle, described a potential ticket with Obi as a winning formula.
“Personally, I cannot remember any better combination, no matter how much time you are given, to find those who can beat us in terms of doing the right thing for this country,” he added.

He further noted that the “Obedient” and “Kwankwasiyya” movements are already collaborating across the country.
According to him, young Nigerians are no longer interested in ethnic or religious sentiments but are driven by the desire to end economic hardship, unemployment, and insecurity.
“Young people are looking for the right leadership for this country, and I think they are absolutely right,” he remarked.
Criticizing the ruling APC, Kwankwaso argued that many current officeholders are disconnected from the daily struggles of Nigerians.
He predicted that the 2027 election would be decided by the frustrations of the citizens rather than financial strength or party structures.
