The status of Reno Omokri, Nigeria’s Ambassador-designate to Mexico, remains unconfirmed, even as other newly appointed envoys continue to receive their Letters of Credence to begin their duties abroad.

This delay persists months after the initial appointments were announced.

Omokri recently claimed during a television interview that his resumption in Mexico was being stalled by the country’s focus on co-hosting the 2026 World Cup alongside the United States and Canada.

This statement was met with skepticism, as it suggested that Mexico had paused standard state affairs due to the global football tournament.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government announced on Tuesday that the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, had presented Letters of Credence to the Ambassadors/High Commissioners-designate to Trinidad & Tobago, Kenya, Equatorial Guinea, and Egypt on Monday, June 22, 2026.

This followed the receipt of their respective Agrèments. With these latest presentations, the total number of approved envoys has reached 63 out of the 69 appointed by President Bola Tinubu.

One notable diplomat who has already assumed his post is Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, the High Commissioner to South Africa, following a previous change to his initial posting in Germany.

The official statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, signed by spokesperson Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, did not mention the status of the remaining three envoys.

The ministry noted: “The Ministry wishes to inform that out of the 69 Ambassadors appointed by His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, a total number of 63 Agrèments have been received so far from the countries they are assigned to, including India and South Africa, and many of the affected Ambassadors have since departed to their respective countries to commence their tour of duty.”

The statement concluded: “The Ministry is optimistic that the remaining countries will likewise convey their acceptance of the Ambassadors posted to their capitals to consolidate cordial diplomatic relations with Nigeria.”
