Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and former governor of Kano State, has disclosed that presidential candidate Peter Obi has committed to serving just a single four-year term if they secure victory in 2027.
During an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Kwankwaso explained that he and Obi formalized a power-rotation pact ensuring the presidency alternates between the South and the North.
Addressing past remarks where he reportedly dismissed the idea of running for the vice presidency, Kwankwaso noted that shifting political dynamics necessitated a new approach.
With incumbent President Bola Tinubu representing the southern region, Kwankwaso reasoned that the South should complete another full four-year mandate before power shifts back to the North.
“The circumstance has changed to the extent that together we felt that the presidency should go to the South for four years. Thereafter, it will come back to the North.”
Confirming that the pact exists in written form, Kwankwaso stated, “We have done one for the party, and we have done another one between the two of us.”
When pressed on whether Obi truly agreed to a single-term limit, he affirmed, “Oh yes. I personally believe him. I don’t think, based on what I now know about him, he will change his mind when the time comes.”
According to the arrangement, an NDC victory in the upcoming electoral cycle would see the presidency return to the northern region after a single four-year administration.
