BREAKING: Reason Why Supreme Court Affirmed Diri As Bayelsa Governor

The Supreme Court has upheld the re-election of Senator Douye Diri as Governor of Bayelsa State, rejecting the appeal filed by Timipre Sylva, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, from the November 11, 2023, off-cycle election.

On Friday, a five-member panel of the Supreme Court, led by Justice Lawal Garba, confirmed the Court of Appeal’s July 15 decision, which had deemed Sylva’s appeal an abuse of court process due to the submission of two notices of appeal.

The Court found fault with Sylva’s submission of two separate appeal notices.

The Supreme Court unanimously dismissed the appeal for lacking merit. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had previously declared Governor Douye Diri of the PDP as the winner with 175,196 votes, defeating Timipre Sylva of the APC, who received 110,108 votes.
