Research indicates that individuals with certain esophageal conditions, such as achalasia—a rare disorder that impairs the ability to swallow—might benefit from avoiding cold water.

Achalasia can make swallowing difficult, and a 2012 study found that cold water exacerbated symptoms in those with the condition.

In contrast, hot water appeared to help soothe and relax the esophagus, easing the swallowing process.

Additionally, a 2001 study involving 669 women suggested that cold water might trigger headaches in some individuals.

The study reported that 7.6% of participants experienced a headache after drinking 150 milliliters of ice-cold water through a straw.

Those with active migraines were found to be twice as likely to experience a headache from cold water compared to those without a history of migraines.
