Fresh Update On Dangote Refinery Petrol Production Emerge

The 650,000-barrel-per-day Dangote refinery is currently conducting test runs for the production of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol), with full operations anticipated by mid-September.

Reuters reported this information based on a note from industry monitor IIR Energy.

The $20 billion refinery, developed by Aliko Dangote, has so far produced only diesel and other distillate fuels. It had initially planned to begin petrol deliveries in July, having previously targeted a May start for motor fuel production.

“It is possible that there could be further extensions”, IIR said in a note to clients.

Once fully operational, the refinery is poised to transform the Europe-to-Africa fuel trade and reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported refined products.

Earlier this month, the Federal Government’s committee tasked with overseeing the implementation of crude oil sales to local refineries in naira reached an agreement with the Dangote Petroleum Refinery for a petrol rollout in September.

The report also revealed that the Federal Government plans to begin crude oil sales to the Dangote Refinery and other local refineries starting October 1, 2024.

This was announced by Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, during a meeting with the Implementation Committee in Abuja.

Also at the meeting, the Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Dr Zacch Adedeji, and the Chairman of the Technical Sub-Committee reported that “The first PMS delivery from Dangote is expected next month under existing agreements.”
