Onnoghen’s initial conviction, handed down on April 18, 2019, by the tribunal chaired by Danladi Umar, was dismissed by the Court of Appeal after addressing the underlying issues that led to the trial.

In his judgment, Presiding Justice Abba Mohammed endorsed the settlement terms reached between the federal government and Onnoghen, ordering the return of the four bank accounts previously forfeited by the former CJN.
Following the judgment, Onnoghen’s counsel, Senior Advocate of Nigeria Adegboyega Awomolo, expressed gratitude to President Tinubu and the Attorney General of the Federation for their roles in facilitating the resolution.
