Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has rewarded Isioma Sybil Nwosu, the top graduating student of Lagos State University (LASU) for the 2023/2024 academic year, with a N10 million cash prize.
Nwosu, a Biochemistry graduate from the Faculty of Science, achieved a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.93.
The Governor announced this reward on Thursday at LASU’s 28th Convocation Ceremony held at the Buba Marwa Auditorium, Ojo.

The event also included the conferment of Honorary Doctorate Degrees and Distinguished Professorships on notable figures such as Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa (retd.), Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, and Otunba Olufemi Pedro, former Deputy Governor of Lagos State.
Marwa, a former military administrator of Lagos State, received a Doctor of Humane Letters (Infrastructure, Security and National Development) Honoris Causa, while Pedro was awarded a Doctor of Business (Banking, Entrepreneurship and National Development) Honoris Causa.
Represented by his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the crucial role of education in societal progress, stating its importance in addressing societal needs and human development.
He stressed that academic excellence should be valued as highly as achievements in entertainment, fashion, or sports, urging the fostering of a culture that values knowledge and innovation.
Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to empowering students in state-owned tertiary institutions through strategic investments and infrastructure development, promising increased financial investment to expand infrastructure and ensure the safety and welfare of staff and students.

Highlighting the THEMES+ agenda, the Governor noted education as a key priority and pointed to initiatives like the Job Initiative Lagos, designed to improve the employability of graduating students.
He emphasized that these efforts demonstrate the government’s commitment to the welfare and educational advancement of staff and students of LASU, as well as indigenes and residents of Lagos State.
The Vice-Chancellor of LASU, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, expressed gratitude to the state government for its continuous and exceptional support. She reported that 43 out of the 44 courses offered by the university received accreditation during the October–November 2023 exercise.
She also mentioned that the Africa Centre of Excellence for Innovative and Transformative STEM Education had launched new postgraduate programs, including international students for the first time.
In his address, the Chancellor of LASU, Prof. Gbolahan Elias (SAN), encouraged the graduating students to represent the university well, reminding them that they represent themselves, their families, the university, and the state. He urged them to remain innovative and focused in their pursuit of success.
A total of 11,917 students graduated during the ceremony, including Diploma holders, first-degree graduates, Postgraduate students, Postgraduate Diploma recipients, Academic Masters, Professional Masters, Doctor of Philosophy (PhD.) recipients, and holders of Professional Doctoral Degrees.
