FIRS Announces Automatic Tax Identification Number For Nigerians, Says No Need To Apply For Separate TIN

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has announced that individual Nigerians will no longer need to apply for a separate Tax Identification Number (TIN), as their National Identification Number (NIN) has automatically assumed that role.

This update was shared on Monday, December 22, 2025, during a public awareness campaign on X (formerly Twitter) regarding Nigeria’s new tax laws.

The FIRS clarified that for registered businesses, the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registration number will now double as their official tax identifier under the modernized system.

The announcement addresses public anxiety regarding new requirements that mandate a Tax ID for critical transactions, such as maintaining bank accounts.

The FIRS explained that the Nigeria Tax Administration Act (NTAA), set to begin on January 1, 2026, strengthens these rules, though it noted that the requirement has technically existed since the Finance Act of 2019.

“The Tax ID unifies all Tax Identification Numbers previously issued by the FIRS and State Internal Revenue Services into a single identifier,” the Service stated.

“For individuals, your NIN automatically serves as your Tax ID, while for registered companies, your CAC RC number is used. You do not need a physical card, as the Tax ID is a unique number linked directly to your identity.”

The FIRS emphasized that this unification is intended to streamline the tax process, eliminate duplication, and block loopholes for tax evasion.

By linking tax identity directly to the NIN and CAC numbers, the government aims to ensure that everyone earning a taxable income contributes their fair share.
