The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Atiku Abubakar, has disclosed how he protected former President Olusegun Obasanjo while he was imprisoned, stating that he leaked details regarding an injection that could have proved fatal.

Atiku explained that a similar fate befell the late General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, emphasizing that upon learning of the plot targeting Obasanjo, he cautioned him against accepting the injection.

Atiku made these remarks during a discussion with journalists amid an ongoing exchange of words regarding their political partnership and respective parts in the former president’s ascent to power in 1999.

The former vice president stated, “I saved Obasanjo’s life in prison by leaking information about an impending injection that could have killed him.

“They did the same to Yar’Adua, and when I learnt they planned to do it to him, I warned him not to allow the injection. Today, he wants the world to hate me because I opposed his third-term ambition.”

He downplayed Obasanjo’s electoral weight, asserting that he failed to secure his home state or the South-west during the 1999 presidential contest.

Atiku stated, “In 1999, he could not even win his own state or the South-west; it was Arewa that made him President. He possesses no electoral value.”

Atiku, rejecting Obasanjo’s version of events, accused him of distorting history and trying to leverage the past for political gain ahead of upcoming elections.

He further defended his contributions to their administration, mentioning that he backed Obasanjo following his release from prison and helped establish the political framework that enabled their 1999 electoral win.

Discussing future political aspirations, Atiku underscored his track record of generating avenues for young Nigerians throughout his time in office as vice president.

He noted that several individuals who benefited from those initiatives have advanced to become governors, ministers, directors, and other public servants.

Atiku pledged that an administration led by him would persistently foster avenues for young citizens to serve and assume leadership responsibilities.
