Torrential rainfall brought movement to a standstill across multiple areas of Abuja on Saturday, as surging floodwaters overtook primary roads and residential neighborhoods, trapping motorists and compelling various businesses to temporarily shut down.

Severe flooding was documented in several spots, such as Adetokunbo Ademola Crescent located in Wuse 2, the vicinity surrounding Delight Event Centre in Gudu, and sections of Efab Estate situated in Lokogoma.

Furthermore, the bridge connecting Gaduwa and Durumi became completely swamped by rising water, stopping motorists from passing through smoothly.

A number of automobiles were either partially submerged or impacted by the surging tides, and commercial establishments in impacted zones pulled down their shutters as water pushed into their buildings.

A local resident who filmed the severe conditions along the Ebeano-Gudu road issued a public plea directing the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory to step in and fix the flooding crisis.

“Dear Honourable Minister of the FCT, please come to our rescue. This is the current situation of Ebeano/Gudu Road. The bridge is flooded,” the resident said.

The resident added, “People coming from Gudu junction can’t cross, people coming from Ebeano can’t get to Gudu. Mr Project, please come and help us.”

The deluge completely blocked transit routes linking Ebeano and Gudu, leaving drivers and locals scrambling for alternative paths as water swallowed the tarmac and connecting bridge.

This emergency has once again sparked debate regarding the capability of flood-management systems and drainage networks within Abuja, specifically given worries surrounding heavy public investments directed toward tackling environmental hurdles.

Saturday’s flood crisis has therefore heightened anxieties over whether current flood-mitigation strategies suffice in safeguarding Abuja’s population, drivers, and commercial entities, particularly as the rainy season hits its peak.
